Jens Karstens

is Postdoctoral Researcher at GEOMAR participating in different projects.

The Project CASCO - Risk workflow for cascading and compounding hazards in coastal urban areas - starting in 2022 is a cooperation of GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences with GEOMAR (PI Morelia Urlaub) the Centre for Materials and Coastal Research (HZG) and the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI).

Jens will be working on tsunami modeling and hazard/risk assessment at Etna which is also a case study in the PRE-COLLAPSE project.

For the Helmholtz Young Investigator Project -Do volcanoes collapse retrogressively?- Jens is developing volcano monitoring and early warning technology and methods.

For the project THESEUS -Tsunami hazard of explosive submarine eruptions- Jens provided site survey data for drilling sites of the IODP Expediton 398 "Hellenic Arc Volcanic Field" and works on the volcanostratigraphy of the Minoan Eruption of Santorini (Greece) and the 1650 eruption and tsunami of the underwater volcano Kolumbo, which will also be a case study in the PRE-COLLAPSE project.

Previously Jens worked on 3D reflection seismic analysis of submarine deposited pyroclastic flows and debris avalanches off Montserrat (Lesser Antilles) and the 1888 Sector Collapse of Ritter Island (Papua New Guinea) (PRE-COLLAPSE case study). At Ritter Island he did additional numerical tsunami simulations.
